God Speed Atlantis

I have just been watching the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, live on NASA TV. This is the last ever shuttle launch.

I can remember viewing the very first launch of the shuttle Columbia on 12 April 1981 from a seismic exploration vessel in the Red Sea. It seems a life time ago.

This is a sad end to a program that achieved so much, yet did not live up to its expectations. Those of us bought up on Apollo could not have thought that manned exploration of space would end this way.
