The design rules are easy to use, having been incorporated into Excel worksheets that allow you to explore the consequences of varying strut materials, strut and truss dimensions, and connection methods. Similarly, other worksheets allow you to quickly lay out optical components and evaluate their impact on field illumination, telescope balance, and eyepiece height, and calculate deflection of beams and other structures as a function of size, shape, and load.

When buying a commercial telescope, or copying an existing design, one accepts the compromises made by the builder. When making your own, you can have features that no manufacturer could provide and remain profitable. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
As long as he can remember, Albert Highe has been driven by the desire to understand, and then influence, how things work. This desire has led to life-long interests in science and technology. His formal training culminated in a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1981. He spent his working career in companies that sold products to mostly industrial markets. As an individual contributor, he acquired knowledge of materials science, electrochemistry, and electrical and mechanical engineering, and applied his talents to the development of new materials, capabilities, and products. As he transitioned to technical management (eventually becoming director of a world-wide technical organization), he increasingly supervised the efforts of others.

It’s little wonder that Albert’s interest in science and technology drew him to the hobby of amateur astronomy. It offers many opportunities to learn about the science of the universe and the technology of fine optics. Since observing his first Messier objects in 1990 with a borrowed 4-inch reflector, he has logged observations of thousands of objects using 6- to 20-inch Newtonian reflectors. Early on, he discovered no commercial telescope met all of his needs. Creating his own was a perfect opportunity to integrate his interests, technical training, and product development experience. He probably is best known for his unique three parallel strut reflector designs that have appeared in Amateur Telescope Making Journal and Sky and Telescope, and on the websites of manufacturers who adopted them for sale
