Concept: Although the wide true field capability allows all Tele Vue scopes to operate as their own finders, I thought it would be nice to have a simple finder to point the telescope. The finder had to be elegant in form, function and operation and not have to be removed when storing the telescope. A unit-powerfinder serves these goals best. Choosing an "inverse-Herschelian" design for projecting a small "red star" seemed appropriate. With a 39mm "exit pupil, " and unlimited eye-relief, I believe we met our goals. The proof? The elegant solution to pointing your telescope. Starbeam is the ultimate unit-power finder. Starbeam is the unit power finder designed to allow you to point to any object and have it appear in the eyepiece no matter the magnification. A transparent "red-star" appears projected against the sky background. The "star" is actually a small pinhole illuminated by a red L.E.D. Placed at the focus of a beam-splitting mirror/lens, the "star" is projected to infinity. Starbeam says "You are here!"

The size of the pinhole and focal length of the mirror result in a 10 arc-minute redstar, (1/3 the diameter of the moon). Its size, color and adjustable brightness make it easy to see against any twilight to dark sky background. With a mirror aperture of 39mm, the projected image can be easily seen at any distance behind the mirror, whether 2 inches or 2 feet! Because the mirror surface is uncoated, and a compensating curve is designed into the back of the mirror, the sky background appears normal through it.

There are two base channels available for Starbeam, one for Tele Vue telescopes and one for telescopes of 4" or larger tube diameter. For Tele Vue telescopes, specify Starbeam-T. For other telescopes, specify Starbeam-U. Note. Does not fit on Tele Vue Ranger.

Adjustment screws and a lock screw allow easy alignment with your telescope.
