Coronado Personal Solar Telescope (PST)
The PST is the latest innovation from Coronado. This ‘little’ telescope is another step toward
our goal of making it possible for everyone to, “Experience the Sun our way.”
Sub angstrom H-A systems have long been cost prohibitive for the amateur. Designs other
than the Coronado are difficult to use because of temperature and F-Ratio requirements. Not
only does the PST have a bandpass of <1.0 angstrom but it is also thermally stable and
requires no more time to operate than putting in a eyepiece and adjusting the focus… did we
mention the price of just £399.00?
The PST represents the same technology and quality that goes into a SolarMax series
telescope but with a few unique design characteristics that allow us to offer it for less than
some premium eyepieces. The PST will show you prominences, active regions, filaments, as
well as other surface details – at <1.0 angstrom it will not reveal as much surface detail as
the SolarMax series telescope and filters but it certainly doesn’t disappoint.
“To be honest I was not expecting too much, bearing in mind the cost and diminutive nature
of the ‘scope, I finally set up in the late afternoon. Alignment of the ‘scope is a breeze using
the inbuilt sun finder, as I looked through the eyepiece I could see a red sun with a small
sunspot but no prominences or H-A detail and then decided to try the ‘tuner’, as I rotated the
ring the view changed, prominences popped into view! With a little further “tweaking”
filaments, faculae, and “orange peel” surface came into view in incredible detail! Absolutely
brilliant…” – Mr. N. Longshaw, U.K.
The PST is made from milled aluminium, not plastic! At £429.00 the P.S.T. comes with a
built in Sol Ranger for easy alignment, a 20mm Kellner eyepiece, and a re-usable box with
dye cut foam for safe storage. Optional accessories include a hard travel case, MALTA
tabletop mount, CEMAX series eyepieces, and SolarMax 40 for double stacking and
narrowing the bandpass. To add a SolarMax 40 you will require the T-Max 40 for attaching the
unit directly to the PST.

What You Will See With The Coronado Personal Solar Telescope:
The narrowband filter within the PST isolates a specific bandwidth of light called Hydrogen
Alpha. This allows one to view the Sun's Chromosphere. The image of the Sun will be a deep
red across the entire disk. Be aware that it can take time to "train" one's eye for H-Alpha
viewing. This instrument was designed for single eyepiece visual use only. Coronado will not
guarantee the performance of aftermarket products, including eyepieces other than those built
by Coronado for the PST.
Prominences - H-Alpha emissions projecting beyond the limb of the Sun, consisting of
cmplex clouds or streamers of gas above or in the chromosphere.
Filaments - Prominences seen against the face of the Sun, appearing as long narrow dark
streamers or diffuse complex dark areas in H-Alpha light. Filaments often mark areas of
magnetic shearing.
Active Region - A localized, transient volume of the solar atmosphere in which plages,
Sunspots and flares may be observed. Active regions are the result of enhanced magnetic
fields and appear darker than the surrounding areas with a roughly circular shape.
Plage - Patchy H-Alpha brightening on the solar disk, usually found in or near active regions,
which can last for several days. Plage is irregular in shape and variable in brightness, marking
areas of nearly vertical emerging or reconnecting magnetic field lines.
Sunspots - Moderate to large spots usually consisting of a darker central region (umbra) and
a lighter halo consisting of many short fine fibrils (penumbra).
Flares - A sudden eruption of energy in the solar atmosphere lasting minutes to hours, from
which radiation and particles are emitted.
“I purchased a PST a couple of months ago. After reading some comments on adding the
SolarMax 40 I purchased one and attached it to the PST. There is only one word to describe
the view. WOW - Keep up the good work!!!” – Mr. Rankin, Florida.
Price - £399.00 + £7.50 p&p.
PST Hard Case - £42.00 + £7.50 p&p (free delivery if ordered with telescope).
We recommend the Orion TeleTrak Altazimuth Tracking Mount for use with the PST.
Compact, portable and easy to set up. See the Orion Telescope section of our online
catalogue for details.
